Bishop Pyone was ordained and installed by Archbishop Giovanni d’ Aniello, apostolic delegate to Myanmar, at St. Paul’s Minor Seminary in Pyay.
Some 17 Bishops, 165 priests, 125 nuns and brothers, and about 2,500 lay faithful attended the ordination ceremony.
The new bishop urged lay people in his new diocese “to work together and help one another” in the pilgrimage of life here on Earth.
Monsignor Thomas Htun Myint, a priest from Pyay diocese, praised the new appointment.
“I’m very happy and thank God for selecting a person, who is enthusiastic, humble and an active person.”
Bishop Pyone Cho was born in 1949 and ordained a priest in March, 1975. He served as a pastor in several parishes and as spiritual director and rector at a Catholic major seminary between 1975 and 2006, before departing for the United States in 2007.
He was appointed by the Vatican as Pyay’s new bishop on December 3, 2010, while he was still serving in Kansas City.
According to the 2011 official Catholic Directory, there are 24,900 Catholics, 19 parishes & quasi parishes, 37 priests, 67 women religious and 88 catechists in Pyay diocese.
